3. Who can deliver Gold NNAS courses?

Posted Thursday, June 17, 2004

New NNAS course providers are usually approved to run only Bronze and Silver Awards for a period of time.

The minimum requirements for anyone wishing to go on to deliver Gold standard NNAS courses are given below.

Gold Level Training course

Qualifications

The instructor/leader is to hold the Walking Group Leader(WGL) Award, or Mountain Leader (ML)Summer Award, or British Orienteering Federation(BOF) Level 4 Award.

Experience

It is preferable for these leaders to have taught navigation to the level of their own award, i.e. worked on WGL, ML or BOF regional level training or assessment courses.

Gold Level Assessment course

Qualifications

As above, for level of qualification

Experience

The instructor/leader must have taught navigation to the level of their own award, i.e. worked on WGL, ML or BOF regional level training or assessment courses.

In order to gain such experience, and approval from NNAS to assess at gold standard we require evidence (probably in the form of a letter) from the course director of one of the above NGB courses. This would say that the person concerned had worked at this level either alongside the more experienced person or by the experienced person observing them at work at this level. The letter must also say that they think the potential gold assessor would be competent to assess at Gold NNAS level.

i.e. The more experienced person writes a statement of competence for the potential gold NNAS assessor, which must be sent to NNAS office prior to their delivery of any Gold Award assessment course. NNAS will respond in writing.

The NNAS committee deems these measures appropriate for the prestigious gold level NNAS award. They consider it a form of moderation for this incentive scheme, allowing the high standards of course delivery to continue to a broader field of participants.
